A landmark 23-hour heart transplant procedure carried out in 1987 by renowned Polish cardiac surgeon Dr. Zbigniew Religa would go down in medical history. It’s interesting to note that there has been some discussion on who the patient in the well-known picture is. Although some sources claim that the person in the picture is not Żytkiewicz, his granddaughter has recognised him, confirming the moment’s personal significance.
Beyond this one incident, Dr. Religa made several advances to medicine. He kept coming up with innovative surgical methods and coaching the upcoming generation of heart surgeons. His efforts paved the way for improvements in cardiac care and heart transplantation both in Poland and abroad. He achieved prestigious positions in the medical profession and was bestowed with many honours in acknowledgement of his services.
Sadly, lung cancer claimed Dr. Religa’s life in 2009. But because of the lives he saved, the medical progress he promoted, and the motivation he still offers to medical professionals around the globe, his legacy lives on.
