Longtime fans of General Hospital may have cause for excitement as significant changes are likely to occur in Port Charles. The return of one of GH’s most adored Australians, Jasper “Jax” Jacks, couldn’t come at a better moment, since recent storylines have brought the WSB back into the spotlight and prominent characters like Carly Spencer and Josslyn Jacks are intricately involved in perilous espionage plans.
The last time we saw Jax, who was first played by Ingo Rademacher, was in 2021, when he fled Port Charles in the midst of the backstage drama surrounding ABC’s COVID-19 vaccination requirement. However, the drama potential is enormous given that Jax’s daughter is now a WSB recruit and that his ex-wife is romantically involved with the leader of the same shady espionage group. Jax would naturally return to defend his daughter and possibly upset some people in the process.
Although recasting popular soap opera characters can frequently be divisive, General Hospital veteran Roger Howarth is the only actor who is really qualified to play Jasper Jacks. Howarth, a famous face and fan favorite, is well-known for his remarkable durability and adaptability in the soap opera industry. He could revitalize Jax while maintaining the character’s essential qualities.
WHY IT’S TIME FOR JAX TO COME BACK
Jax’s homecoming couldn’t come at a better time. His daughter with Carly Spencer, Josslyn Jacks, has recently been involved in international espionage. Josslyn is in over her head after being hired by WSB Director Jack Brennan, who also happens to be dating Carly. Given that the man behind the strings is intimately linked with her mother, it is easy to think that Jax would strongly object to his teenage daughter playing spy games.
Conflict can be created by this alone, but when you combine it with Carly’s convoluted romantic past, you have the makings of a really combustible plot. The relationship between Brennan and Carly might be upset by Jax’s homecoming, particularly if old feelings reemerge or if Jax defends Josslyn in a way that Brennan wouldn’t approve of. There could be moral disputes, parental power struggles, and love sparks—all components of traditional GH drama.
THE REASONS ROGER HOWARTH IS THE IDEAL RECAST
General Hospital watchers are familiar with Roger Howarth. Resuming his role from ABC’s now-canceled One Life to Live, he initially joined the cast in 2012 as Todd Manning. Howarth moved smoothly into the role of Franco Baldwin and then Dr. Austin Gatlin-Holt after character rights difficulties compelled a change. He consistently added complexity, charm, and nuance to vastly disparate parts, ranging from eccentric surgeon to rehabilitated villain.
Howarth’s characters had terrible yet final departures from the canvas as both Franco and Austin met tragic ends. Fans are eager for Howarth to make a comeback, albeit not as a ghost or twin, as a fair amount of time has passed since his last appearance. The best approach to reintegrate him into the show without resorting to old clichés would be to bring him back as a complete recast of a legacy character like Jasper Jacks.
Howarth’s ability to blend in with a character while maintaining a strong presence on film is rare among performers. He is a good contender to reimagine Jax for a new period while retaining the cherished traits that initially made the character a fan favorite because of his charm, emotional range, and track record with the GH audience.
A LOOK BACK AT THE TUMULTUOUS PAST OF JAX AND CARLY
When Jasper Jacks first appeared on General Hospital in 1996, he immediately made a name for himself as a dapper, affluent businessman with a romantic bent. Although he had many well-known relationships, his 2007–2013 marriage to Carly Spencer (formerly Carly Corinthos) is still regarded as one of the most memorable partnerships on the program.
Co-parenting Josslyn and occasionally experiencing sexual friction, Jax and Carly maintained a complex relationship despite their divorce. The possibility of romantic triangles, emotional upheaval, and envious rivalry might rekindle the fire that once characterized “Jarly” if a recast Jax comes to Port Charles while Carly is with Brennan.
There are many alternative options even if a romantic reunion between Jax and Carly is not in the cards. Another interesting romantic choice is Eva LaRue’s character, Natalia Ramirez. Given her enigmatic past and unspoken secrets, Natalia might be a fascinating fit for Jax or even a risky entanglement.
RADEMACHER AND HOWARTH: TWO FAVORITES OF FANS
Fans of General Hospital have undoubtedly been impacted by both Roger Howarth and Ingo Rademacher. Jax became a presence in Port Charles for almost 20 years thanks to Rademacher’s portrayal of the character as a charismatic, self-assured, and ethically conflicted individual. There was a considerable void left by his departure, and although some fans still firmly identify the role with Rademacher, many are amenable to a new interpretation, particularly if it involves reintroducing Jax.
Howarth is likely the only actor who could fit into Jax’s designer shoes thanks to his devoted fan base and stellar GH history. In both romantic and serious plots, his chemistry with current cast members, such as Laura Wright (Carly), would be advantageous. If Carly is caught between old and new loves, their shared past—Wright and Howarth were romantic companions during his time as Franco—may potentially add another level of difficulty.

Fans have already started making assumptions and seeing possible outcomes, and the buzz on social media indicates that the concept is being received. The scene is set for a spectacular Jax homecoming, with the WSB narrative intensifying, Josslyn venturing into perilous area, and Carly encountering fresh difficulties.
Roger Howarth is the only person who can truly embody the role, or perhaps reinvent it. He has everything it takes to offer Jasper Jacks a new chapter worth seeing as a midday icon with exceptional range and unquestionable charisma.
