Val Kilmer made his final Instagram post just days before he passed away.
The 65-year-old actor died on April 1, following a series of health challenges over the last ten years. His daughter, Mercedes, informed the New York Times that pneumonia was the cause of his death.
Fans may recall that the star of Top Gun and Batman Forever was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014. To treat the illness, Kilmer underwent chemotherapy and a tracheotomy, which resulted in lasting damage to his vocal cords.
Kilmer, who first appeared on screen in the 1984 film Top Secret, shared his journey with his diagnosis and recovery in his 2020 memoir, I’m Your Huckleberry, as well as in the Amazon Prime documentary Val.
“I obviously sound much worse than I feel,” Kilmer stated in the documentary. “I can’t talk without covering this hole in my throat. You have to choose between breathing and eating.
“It’s a challenge that is very noticeable to anyone who sees me.”
His final film credit came in 2022 with Top Gun: Maverick, where Val Kilmer returned to his legendary role as Iceman.
After enduring the challenges of his cancer journey, Kilmer decided to step back from acting and focus on his artistic pursuits. This transformation was particularly visible on his Instagram, where he frequently showcased his artwork.
In fact, his last Instagram post featured one of his paintings, accompanied by a caption that read “It’s got that late-night glow. Cool tones with a low burn, like when the campfire cools down but you’re still wide awake.”
The most recent post that included Kilmer himself was shared on February 23. In it, the Willow star was seen with fellow artist and Walking Dead actor David Choe, wearing a Batman mask and humorously stating, “It’s been a while.”
The internet has been inundated with tributes following the heartbreaking news of the star’s passing.
Actor Josh Brolin shared on social media: “You were a brilliant, thought-provoking, courageous, and incredibly creative spark. There aren’t many like you left. I look forward to reuniting in the heavens when my time comes. Until then, I cherish the wonderful memories and sweet thoughts.”
Josh Gad also expressed his condolences, stating: “Rest in peace, Val Kilmer. Thank you for shaping so many films from my childhood. You were truly an icon.”
Rest in peace, Val Kilmer!
